The evolution of PRRSV and how to control it

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has evolved over time with mechanisms to (1) replicate better in its host, (2) spread more rapidly between pigs, and (3) escape immunity. As a result, PRRSV is difficult to control by vaccination alone. Nevertheless, we can state that the commercial attenuated vaccines are still work and that autogenous vaccines may be useful (under development).

Prof. Nauwynck will talk about the evolution of PRRSV (law of the fittest) and its genetic basis and how to control PRRS with a new vaccination strategy and accompanying measures.

Presentation by:
Prof. Dr. Hans Nauwynck, Ghent University

Hans Nauwynck is a DVM, who did his PhD and directly became nominated as professor at Ghent University in 1993. In 2004, he took the lead of the Laboratory of Virology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University and became Diplomate at the European College of Pig Health Management. He lectures several courses on viral diseases in mammals, fish and shellfish. His research focuses on the cellular and molecular pathogenesis of viral diseases in humans and animals with special emphasis on (i) the entry of the virus in its host cell, (ii) the invasion of the virus in its host through barriers, via leukocytes and along neurons and (iii) the escape of the virus from immunity. Better insights led to the development of new diagnostics, better viral disease control measures and tailor-made vaccines.

He is (co-)author of 483 peer reviewed papers, past promoter of 79 PhDs, owner of 12 patents and founder of two spin-off companies. Twenty of his master/phD/postdoc students became professor worldwide. He is a regular invited speaker at international congresses. He likes to brainstorm, break down dogmas and head for a better and healthier world with an open mind.
